The Mass Explained to Children

Maria Montessori, The Mass Explained to Children (1932)

This work has been reprinted in various editions. Here are two:

  • Hardcover– published 2011 by Roman Catholic Books out of Colorado. The Amazon listing does not have images of the inside of this edition, but the binding and printing are both well done.
  • Softcover – published 2015 by Angelico Press.

The content of both editions should be the same. The Angelico Press edition was reviewed by the New Liturgical Movement here (the NLM review gives a good impression of the artwork).

This is not a children’s missal. Rather, it is what it calls itself: an explanation of the Mass and its constituent parts, written for children. The book can provide useful canned explanations for parents of younger children: the scarcity of pictures and the long blocks of text probably make it unapproachable for the youngest readers on their own. It is eminently readable in the hands of a child accustomed to consuming longer texts, however.
